Nearly forty years ago a young English University student stepped off the airport bus at Stamford Connecticut and was greeted by Sandra Moore, Tab soda in hand. Spending my first few days in Greenwich before heading up with Peter to Martha’s Vineyard with Peter and Sandra was a wonderful introduction to American hospitality. The first morning Peter suggested that my English summer attire might be supplemented with some more ‘Preppy’ American kit. With cash in hand I was dispatched to Greenwich Avenue to buy Polo shirts, OP shorts and loafers. Thus began my friendship with Peter and Sandra and my association with FOCUS.
When in 1992 I assumed the role of Executive Director of FOCUS Peter was first to congratulate me and offer his support. Throughout my tenure he was always willing to offer advice and counsel yet never unless asked for which I was sincerely grateful.
Fast forward to three years ago and Lucy and I were invited to a lunch at Susan and Gary DiCamillo’s house in downtown Charleston with a ‘few’ FOCUS friends. At the end of this fairly large gathering Peter made an impromptu speech reflecting on FOCUS and my leadership. I cannot recall exactly what he said but it was filled with humour, charm and grace. Peter was particularly thoughtful in recognising the role Lucy had played as we had worked so often together as husband and wife. It was one of those occasions when Peter’s words meant such a great deal and had a deep and lasting effect on us both.
Peter combined that wonderful balance of clear biblical conviction combined with the ability to laugh at himself. Peter understood the challenges of secularisation better than most and as such could speak to those on the periphery of the Christian faith in a way that was engaging and attractive.
He will be sorely missed, well done good and faithful servant.
