It has been a very real privilege to have known Peter Moore since we first met in 1965 at All Souls Langham place and discovered our common desire to communicate the truth of the Gospel to young people. This led to Peter inviting me from England to help at the first FOCUS camp in Martha’s Vineyard in July August 1973 and to see first hand the excellent work that he was doing with the help of his wife Sandra. We had already got to know Sandra as she had been on one of my ski camps in Villars, Switzerland where we had the privilege of visiting L’Abri and to hear the brilliant lectures of Francis Schaeffer arguing for the truth of God’s revealed in scripture. At the end of my stay Peter asked me to attend The Episcopal Church youth council meeting in the New York Yacht Club. Here I was able to hear and support Peter as he made a bold stand for the vital importance of holding on to God’s revealed truth in Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever rather than adapting to current trends. I can remember the Episcopal Chaplain of Yale University saying that sex has become no more significant for students than shaking hands and that for the Episcopal Church to argue otherwise would mean that they would no longer attract young people. To which Peter replied that this would undermine God’s purpose for marriage and the family and how sex must be kept as the expression of a life long commitment between husband and wife within the context of marriage.
So over the years we have kept in touch, prayed for each other, had Peter to stay and been on holidays together. We have sought to stand firm for the truth once delivered which alone is the power of God to salvation to all who believe as Peter was able to reaffirm by his brilliant 30 podcasts The Spreading Flame which I was able to pass on to friends around the world. So Peter will be greatly missed.
