My wife Franny and I spent the summer of 1971 with Peter and Sandy as part of a volunteer Focus team (including Nan Powlison, Debbie Smith, and Sally Valentine) working out of a Vineyard house on what was then called Gay Head. Focus students and volunteers were invited to come visit and be part of a Christian community there (before the Focus Study Center existed). To help pay rent, Peter and I were employed at the Chilmark Community Center as tennis instructors. Peter came back one day and told us of a very difficult tennis lesson he had had with a middle-aged woman. He kept telling her to “bend your knees” over and over. Finally the woman exclaimed in a loud, affronted voice, “I will never bend my knees to anybody!” Peter thought she was nervous about having a minister instructing her. We had a good laugh about that. It certainly pointed to the main obstacle of pride in coming to know Christ. Peter was a gifted teacher and winsome evangelist of the gospel greatly used by God.
